| Abstract | A cana-de-açúcar é um das culturas mais importantes para a economia brasileira; conseqüentemente, a informação exata sobre a produção da cultura é uma tarefa relevante. Diversos métodos buscam fornecer estatísticas agrícolas para o nível municipal, regional, estadual ou nacional. A micro-região de Ribeirão Preto engloba 14% das unidades produtoras do país, cultivando cerca de 1 milhão de hectares de cana-de-açúcar e produzindo aproximadamente 47% do açúcar e 45% do álcool do Estado de São Paulo. Devido à importância de estimativa de área desta cultura nesta região, testouse um método de amostragem que pelo uso de imagens de satélites e Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG), que busca estimar a área exata de cana-de-açúcar na micro-região de Ribeirão Preto. Para avaliar os resultados deste estudo um mapa da referência da cana-de-açúcar foi disponibilizado. Foi selecionado um conjunto amostral de 165 segmentos de 1 x 1 km, a área de cana-de-açúcar foi estimada com uma diferença relativa de apenas 4.2% (120 ha) para o nível da confiança de 99%. O resultado é incentivador, desde que possa ser obtido antes da colheita, pois não depende de informações subjetivas e fornece um erro associado a área estimada. ABSTRACT: Sugarcane is among the most important commodities to Brasil; therefore, accurate information about sugarcane production is a relevant task. Several methods are available to provide agricultural statistics for municipal, regional, state or country level. In the present work we tested a sampling method that uses remote sensing images together with Geographic Information System (GIS) to accurately estimate sugarcane area at the regional level for the region of Ribeirão Preto which is the most relevant sugarcane production region of São Paulo State, Brazil. To evaluate the results of this study a sugarcane reference map was available. It was found that with a selected sample set of 165 segments with 1 x 1 km, sugarcane area could be estimated with a relative difference of only 4.2% (120 ha) and at a confidence level of 99%. The result is encouraging since it can be obtained early in the crop year season, is independent of subjective information and provides an error associated to the area estimation. |
